Welcome to Our Lady of Grace and St. Sylvester Parish.

St. Sylvester Mission Narrative:

 

Having prayed and reflected over the components that give life to a parish’s mission, we the people of ST. SYLVESTER PARISH embrace the MISSION to which God is calling us . We are called to be a welcoming, faithful, and missionary-oriented community that desires to share the joy of the Gospel. Our beautiful church and prominent location in the Logan Square area allows us to have a presence in this diverse and ever-changing neighborhood, inviting new and long-time parishioners to come, encounter, and know the person of Jesus Christ more deeply.

Our parish is at a time when our neighborhood demographics are changing, which gives us the opportunity to work together to serve the needs of all our brothers and sisters, and to serve God.  With the changes in demographics, we rely on our current parish strengths of welcoming, diversity, and quality education for our children. We are dedicated to serving those in need, while embracing new opportunities to reflect on some of our current ministries and create new ones to serve the needs in our neighborhood.

 

Our parish mission is inspired by the scriptural story of Jesus and the Samaritan Woman.  We learn from the Samaritan woman the right way to respond to an encounter with Christ.  We recognize that, after she encountered Jesus, she left her bucket at the well and went to call others to come and encounter Christ.   Jesus said to the woman, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but those who drink of the water that I will give them will never be thirsty.  The water that I will give will become in them a spring of water gushing up to eternal life” (John 4:13-14).  In response to this recognition, we follow Christ, leaving behind our old way of life and going out, with joy, to proclaim the good news and bear witness to God’s love.

Through the Holy Spirit, our parish is committed to be servants of God. Christ has called us, the community of St. Sylvester, to focus on evangelization, missionary spirit, and spiritual stewardship as the building blocks to carry out his mission.

 

As a parish, we reach out to our neighbors and invite them to encounter Christ and foster the mission entrusted to our church. We create events and an atmosphere that will bring new people into the church and prepare them to become missionary disciples. We strive to serve the diverse needs of the people, while raising awareness of social issues that are affecting our community.

 

We recognize that the diversity of our parish offers many talents and gifts, and in gratitude for these blessings we are dedicating them to doing God’s will. We hope to encourage all our parishioners to recognize their talents and dedicate them, with joyful heart, to the service of God.

 

Narativo Declaración de la misión

Luego de orar y reflexionar sobre los elementos que dan vida a la misión de una parroquia, nosotros, el pueblo de la parroquia de San Silvestre, aceptamos la MISIÓN a la que Dios nos llama.  Este llamado es a ser una comunidad de acogimiento, de fe y misionera que comparte la alegría del Evangelio. Nuestro hermoso templo y su ubicación ventajosa en el área de Logan Square nos permite tener presencia en este diverso y cambiante barrio, invitando a los recién llegados y los feligreses que llevan mucho tiempo, a conocer más profundamente a la persona de Jesucristo.

 

Nuestra parroquia vive una época de cambios demográficos que ofrecen la oportunidad de trabajar juntos para servir a Dios y a nuestros hermanos y hermanas más necesitados. Con los cambios demográficos, confiamos en nuestras fortalezas parroquiales como el espíritu de bienvenida, la diversidad, y la calidad de educación para nuestros niños. Nos dedicamos a servir a los más necesitados, mientras abrazamos las oportunidades nuevas para reflexionar sobre los ministerios existentes y crear nuevos ministerios dedicados a servir las necesidades de nuestra comunidad.

 

La misión de nuestra parroquia se inspira en la historia de Jesús y la mujer samaritana en las Escrituras. De la mujer podemos aprender la manera correcta de responder a un encuentro con Cristo. Sabemos que después del encuentro con Jesús, ella abandonó su cántaro en el pozo y salió a llamar a otros para que conocieran a Cristo. Jesús le dijo a la mujer samaritana, “Todo el que beba de esta agua volverá a tener sed, pero el que beba del agua que yo le daré, no volverá a tener sed jamás. Sino que el agua que yo le daré se convertirá en un manantial del que brotará la vida eterna”. (Juan 4:13).

 

A través del Espíritu Santo, nuestra parroquia se compromete a ser servidores de Dios. A la comunidad de San Silvestre, Cristo nos ha llamado a enfocarnos en la evangelización, en el espíritu misionero y la corresponsabilidad espiritual como los fundamentos para llevar a cabo nuestra misión.

 

Como parroquia, les extendemos la mano a nuestros vecinos y los invitamos al encuentro personal con Cristo y fomentar la misión encomendada a nuestra iglesia. Celebramos eventos en una atmósfera para traer gente nueva a la iglesia y prepararlos para convertirse en discípulos misioneros. Nos esforzamos para servir a las diversas necesidades de las personas, mientras aumentamos conciencia sobre las cuestiones sociales que afectan a nuestra comunidad.

 

Reconocemos que la diversidad de nuestra parroquia nos ofrece muchas bendiciones y talentos, y en agradecimiento a estos dones, los dedicaremos para hacer la voluntad de Dios. Esperamos animar a todos los feligreses a reconocer sus talentos y dedicarlos, con un gran corazón, al servicio de Dios.
